Curious what a McKinsey presentation looks like? Yes, Google is useful. I selected the ones which as less than 10 years old have more than 15 pages. A couple of thoughts:. The slides seem designed to stand alone and survive delivery by an unskilled speaker. My preference is to do the heavy intellectual lifting in a narrative report and then put together a presentation that serves as a verbal executive summary.

When preparing the presentation, the logic comes first, and then the slides serve the logic. Thanks for comment. I have done both — but prefer slides that stand alone. Even minor branding elements can have a large impact on your conversion rate. How much does branding matter for a new independent consultant? In fact, every dollar you invest in branding is a wasted dollar that could be invested in something more important for succeeding as a consultant. When you are starting a consulting businessthere are only two things you should be focused on:. Your first clients will be acquired through networking, direct outreach, or very specific advertising.

The goal for your consulting logo and really for all things branding in your first year is simple: just look moderately presentable.

Your logo should make sense for your business. It should be relevant to who you are and what you are doing. If your value proposition is that you help tattoo businesses launch and grow, then it might make sense for your logo to look more artistic or incorporate features that bring to mind body art.

If you are helping accountants grow their businesses, creating a tattoo-esque logo would make zero sense and detract from your brand. A mountain, on the other hand, makes sense. If possible, we want their to be some element of recognizable uniqueness to the logo, but beyond that, complexity is a hindrance. The main reason we want to avoid complexity is that it is both unnecessary and difficult to pull off.

This image is not stock art. A professional graphic designer had to manually design this graphic and likely went through several drafts before settling on this iteration. It makes sense for a new restaurant to spend a few hundred dollars They are already investing hundreds of thousands in startup costs and branding is a big part of generating buzz for a new restaurant.

Your consulting business, on the other hand, would be in the exact same spot with this as the logo:. It makes your business look modern, and every half-decent graphic designer and graphic design student in knows how to do it. It has 3D styling.

It has multi-directional gradients. Using your business name as your logo makes it relevant by default. Just using the text itself keeps its simple and clean to some extent, with the right font choice rounding out both of those requirements.

Browse until you find one that looks clean and modern. Download the font for free. Unzip the folder. Install the TrueType font file. And just like that, you have your logo! If you want to find some sort of clean, relevant icon to attach to the text, you can, just keep in mind that you are adding unnecessary time to your logo creation process and unnecessary complexity that might detract from your logo or simply require more item to fine tune.

Beyond the traditional line, bar and pie charts, there are a lot of other very useful charts that should be used for the right situation. Focuses on the normalized relative trends of different segments, but can also represent absolute values.

One of the go-to charts of most top strategy consulting firms. The waterfall chart disaggregates elements and totals them as steps to create the whole. Often used to show the magnitude of the different elements that make up something.

Typically start with the largest values on the bottom, unless some other dimension such as process flow or time better organizes the elements.

Allows raw data to visually show patterns or the absence of patterns. It is great to visually show correlations within a lot of data. In some instances, it may be better to remove outliers and focus on the majority of data points. Nice way to visualize the size of elements two levels within a segmentation. Bubble charts are a great way to visualize three or four dimensions. You can use the vertical and horizontal axes, the size, color, and pattern within the bubbles.

Charts let you visualize data in ways where insights often pop off the page. Use a chart to get the point across and highlight insights. Looking at a bunch of numbers is extremely difficult to process, especially for those of us that are more visual.

Charts are like different frames for a picture. Some frames go with some pictures, while other frames clash. Similarly, you have to figure out what the right chart is to showcase your data and make the insights pop.

Here are some best practices when it comes to charts:.They are too long, too dull, too full of useless detail, too generic. And these bad powerpoint presentations matter a lot. They are how we represent ourselves and our work to the world, they are the culmination of our analysis and our thinking.

Nonetheless, McKinsey is a global powerhouse, with more than 28, employees across cities in 65 countries working for high-profile clients and many of its employees have gone on to become C-suite executives for equally notable companies.

This week, McKinsey introduced a new identity designed by Wolff Olins. The old logo was already decent, with a relatively different serif, nicely spaced, and with a solid ampersand. Even the usually problematic bottom serifs are elegantly blended to make the kerning as good as possible. The alignment of the stacked words is a welcome break from centered or flush-left conventions and looks surprisingly good in that arrangement.

The logo looks great big and small, which is a rare achievement for a serif wordmark but its well-modulated contrast allows it to shrink very well. The custom font, named after Marvin Bower, who helped define the structure and principles of McKinsey in the s and 40s, is really nice and blends some of the current trends — spikier serifs plus Windsor -esque serifs plus Chobani-esque charmers — into a bold, crisp, and elegant solution.

Adding a shimmer of blues and purples to the sides is a great way of establishing a house style that can make any number of images appear as if they came from the same source. First, shit. As seen in the video and images below, a lot of care has actually gone into presenting this, which I think is a direct translation of how thoughtful the whole identity system is.

This is all a really fantastic take on the most corporate of corporate designs: everything looks elegant, sophisticated, and serious without settling for boring, safe, or repetitive. The identity elements are mixed and matched in slightly different ways but there is a clear relationship between all of them across all mediums. It may not be right or woke to fawn over a huge corporate job like this but I do think this is an exemplary case study of identity design at this level.
